HOW TO GET TO TENERIFE

Getting to Tenerife is not as easy as visiting your neighbors, but it's not difficult either.

You can fly to Tenerife both by direct flights or use a convenient transfer. You can build your route from anywhere in Europe.

Ferries that connect the island with mainland Spain can be a good option if you're afraid of flying. Choose from two options.

It is also worth considering in advance the option of a transfer from the arrival airport or ferry pier to your chosen resort.

DECIDE ON THE AIRPORT

First, decide which airport you need: Tenerife Sur (TFS) or Tenerife North (TFN). This is quite important.

In the south of Tenerife, near the main resorts of the island, the main airport of Tenerife Sur is located. It works around the clock. Every year it receives an increasing number of flights from almost all European countries. And, importantly, it has a convenient geographical location. Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are about 20 km away. El Medano and the Costa del Silencio are a little closer, and Playa Paraiso and Callao Salvaje are a little further away. Los Gigantes and other villages on the west coast are even further away, but it's best to get to them from the southern airport, too.

Tenerife North Airport is located 13 km from the capital - Santa Cruz. It mainly serves flights from mainland Spain and from other Canary Islands. It is a good choice for those traveling to the northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz, which is about 25 km away. Compared to its southern counterpart, Tenerife North iis quieter and operates from 5:00 to 00:00.

However, even if you arrive at the wrong airport, it's not a problem. Both airports are connected by an excellent road and there are many ways to travel between them. From Tenerife North you can quickly reach the southern resorts, and from Tenerife Sur, you can reach the north of the island.

By ferry to Tenerife

Tenerife-how-to-get-ferry-armas.webp

For those who are unable or unwilling to travel by plane and wish to bring their car (for example, if they live in it), there is the option of traveling to Tenerife by ferry.

There are two reliable companies that provide this service: Trasmediterranea, which departs from Cadiz and Huelva, and Naviera Armas, which departs from Huelva. You can check the schedule, cost, and book ferry tickets on the carriers' websites, or you can use Direct Ferries, a recognized world leader in the sale of ferry tickets, to see all carriers at once and book tickets for any of the ferries.

By the way, Seville is only an hour and a half drive from both ports, so it's worth visiting if you decide to travel to the island by ferry. What better way to start your journey?

Ferry travel time to Tenerife is about two days and costs between 600 and 1200 euros for two people with a car, depending on the route and additional options.

The ferries arrive in the island's capital, Santa Cruz, from where you can easily reach almost anywhere in Tenerife within an hour.

Transfer on Tenerife

There are several ways to get from the airport to your place of residence on Tenerife.

Option #1: public transport

Tenerife South

There are three routes from Tenerife Sur Airport to the southern resorts: No. 40, No. 111, and No. 343. All of these routes go to the main bus station in the south, Estacion Costa Adeje, via Los Cristianos. No. 40 is a special route from the airport, No. 111 is a route from the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, with a stop at the airport, and No. 343 is a bus from Puerto de la Cruz, a resort in the north of the island. Therefore, you can take the same bus not only to the southern resorts but also in the other direction to Puerto de la Cruz itself.

If you need to get to Santa Cruz, you can take either route No. 111 or the relatively new transfer route No. 10, which directly connects the southern airport and the capital. By the way, it may be faster to get to Puerto de la Cruz via the capital, as route No. 343 is not very frequent.

Tenerife North

There are two direct buses from Tenerife North Airport to Puerto de la Cruz: No. 343 and No. 102. Travel time is 30 minutes.

To get to the southern resorts, there are two options: take the direct bus No. 343 or transfer in the capital, with a 20-minute ride on bus No. 102 followed by a transfer to buses No. 110, No. 111, No. 112, or No. 711 (night). The difference between these buses is the travel time and the final destination. No. 110 goes directly to Costa Adeje without stopping at Los Cristianos with a travel time of about 60 minutes. No. 112 takes about the same time but only goes to Los Cristianos (without reaching the Costa Adeje). No. 111 (No. 711) stops at all intermediate stops upon request and stops at the airport. This route is suitable for everyone, but the travel time to the final point (Costa Adeje) increases by 30 minutes.

Place. Time. Tickets

If you find yourself at the airport at night, don't worry, there is a night bus from Santa Cruz to Estacion Costa Adeje (and in the opposite direction) that also goes to the airport.

The bus stops are located directly outside the airport exit. The travel time to the southern resorts is about 30-40 minutes, while the capital is 40-50 minutes away. For bus travel, it is best to use a special ten+ card as it is cheaper. For more information about the travel card, please see the section "How to navigate?", as it should become an essential item for bus travel on the island.

Another important detail to remember is to make sure that you have boarded the bus in the right direction, as buses No. 111 and No. 343 depart from the same stop in both directions. To distinguish between the two, check the electronic scoreboard on the front of the bus, which always displays the final stop (direction of movement) at the bottom. "From where" is at the top, and "Where" is at the bottom.

Option #2: taxi

Getting a taxi is very simple, but it's also much more expensive. Just head to the designated taxi area outside the terminal to catch one. The approximate cost from Tenerife Sur to the southern resorts is 30-50 euros, to Los Gigantes (a resort on the west coast) - 60-80 euros, to the capital (Santa Cruz) - 90-110 euros, and to Puerto de la Cruz - 110-130 euros.

From Tenerife North, a taxi to Puerto de la Cruz costs around 40-50 euros, to Santa Cruz it's 80-90 euros, and to the south of the island (Las Americas) it will cost 100-120 euros. Taxi prices are taken from the official Tenerife taxi website. It should be noted that taxi fares are not cheap. Therefore, for an economical traveler, taking the bus is the way to go!

For more information about the differences between official and unofficial taxis, as well as general information about taking taxis on the island, check out the section "How to navigate".

Option #3: transfer

You can always order a transfer from the airport. For example, using a global Internet service (kiwitaxi) or with the help of local companies. For example, Tenerifetransfer.

The cost of the transfer is no more expensive than the cost of a taxi, and a nice bonus will be that at the exit from the arrival area you will be greeted by a sign with your name. A trifle, but nice. And convenient.

Tenerife-transfer-kiwitaxi.jpg

Option #4: rent a car

You can rent a car right at the airport and not depend on anyone else. Despite the fact that public transport in Tenerife is comfortable and affordable, many people choose to rent a private car. You can decide which rental company to choose, and car rental aggregators like Rentalcars can help you. We will tell you more about the car rental process in the "How to navigate" section.
